BLESSING CEREMONY St. Vincent de Paul Community Center 10/23/2022

12:00 Community Center Tours & Refreshments
1:30 Welcome by Casey Rollins
1:40 Blessing by Father Larry Gearhart

St. Vincent de Paul’s Community Center & Food Pantry Open House. St. Vincent de Paul Society has generations of rich history spanning from its 1833 origins in Paris. Arriving in the US by1845, our Springfield SVdP church conferences began around the 1960s. Today, we are thrilled to share our Springfield District Council’s 40th birthday, which includes six church conferences from here to Russells Point, Ohio, as well as three thrift stores, four food pantries, and countless special works ministries.

Every day, Vincentians feed, clothe, shelter, and counsel struggling men, women, and children. We offer empathy and provide resources, giving relief and hope to our friends in need. They offer us an opportunity to share our charisms of spirituality, and service, as we practice “Love of God of neighbor.”

We have always known that there will always be people in poverty and extreme need. There will always be strangers in our regions who need our help and our welcome. God willing, there will always be Vincentians and other servant leaders there to serve those needs. All of us here today represent that willingness.

We haven’t always known WHAT circumstances might besiege our neighbors each day, demanding further calls to action by US. More importantly, we haven’t always known just HOW we were going to respond to those needs specifically.

Today’s Open House represents St. Vincent de Paul’s loving answer, our fervent response to the ever changing needs of our community, amidst a worldwide pandemic, a homelessness crisis, & a dramatic surge of Immigrants needing housing & employment.

When Springfield District Council was forced to close its doors for eight weeks at the dawn of Covid, that powerlessness provoked us to re-evaluate the safety and efficiency of our practices in our existing facilities. We were certain we could never go back to the once tightly fitted indoor person to person services. We had to have a bigger location, if we were ever permitted to let our people back inside. And then, as a friend recently reminded me, “God winked”, and this building opened up for us. Our people can now return inside to our choice pantry and for emergency, food, shelter, and other services for independent living.

Since Clark County has experienced a miraculous growth in immigrants, estimating over 7,000, St. Vincent has broadened its outreach, with deeper ministry to Springfield’s Haitian & Hispanic neighbors. While food and shelter needs are essential, immigrants’ focuses have centered around their rights to work and have clear immigration statuses.

SVdP hopes to collaborate with local leaders, political advocates, public service agencies, partner nonprofits, and neighbor churches to address these imminent needs. Our new facility also offers dedicated space to the Haitian and Hispanic community; offers technological opportunities to all neighbors; and provides a friendly atmosphere for community service events and collaborations.

We have many people to thank for helping us make this center happen. We‘d like to commemorate our :
Major Donors In Memory of: Pat Dixon (Bruggers), Sophia Doyle, Nancy Fahy, Wilson- Sheehan Foundation, Quinlan Foundation. Our Donor Wall is underway, including those donating $20. to $20k. We’d also thank a large group of local consultants, artists, businesses & contractors, service technicians, as well as countless volunteers who filled in wherever necessary. We will have a presentation, specifically honoring our Volunteers who keep SVdP running every day, and who have helped maintain our organization over many years. We will have our blessing and our proclamation.

1:40 Introduction & Blessing by Father Larry Gearhart
As we join together to bless our Community Center, let us begin by hearing the Mission Statement of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We are : “A network of friends inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.”
(Presenting the Chapel Cross) May this crucifix always remind all who serve in this Center, that they have the responsibility to live the Mission and Values of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Almighty and everlasting God grant to this facility the grace of loving compassion to all those who walk through these doors. Bless all the volunteers who give of their time and love to bring your goodness and concern to those who come seeking comfort and assistance. Bless all who serve here; guide them in all of their decisions, so that through them, all may find your peace and goodness. Amen

Hello Friends,
On October 15, 2021, SVdP acquired the property at 2415 & 2417 East High St. In order to meet our growing neighbor, administrative, and volunteer needs, SVdP purchased this facility outright, made possible by generous donors, prudent financial planning, and the recent sale of a Vincentian-owned rental property. The SVdP Council is also planning upgrades on our existing buildings . We are excited to expand our services to our neighbors in need. Please see the background on this opportunity and the wish list as it’s outgrowth.

A recent assessment by SVdP Board, Trustees, business mentors, and contractors, validated the acquisition of a more accessible facility to enhance and expand our services. The assessment also prioritized essential repairs and upgrades necessary at our thrift center, and repurposing of the current pantry.

SVdP’s Board decision to acquire 2415/2417 E. High St. will:
• Accommodate the increasing needs of our senior volunteers and impoverished neighbors, many that struggle with steps and need other handicap access.
• Move food and other equipment to one floor, to lessen the physical strain on our volunteers.
• Reestablish our Choice pantry and our tradition of one-on-one assistance with neighbors.
• Make our Emergency Intake offices more efficient to resume with one-on-one assistance with neighbors.
• Regroup and restore thrift store space after relocating pantry equipment and supplies stored there.
• Gain 19 more parking spaces. Currently, parking is limited.

SVdP invites you to help us in this process wherever you choose. (See SVdP Facilities “Wish list” attached).
Let us collaborate as a spiritual community, echoing the voices of our poor; and modeling the values of charity, and social justice. Any questions, great ideas, or concerns about this project can be directed to SVdP Board members and Trustees. We will continue to update our community as this project unfolds.

A little background- St. Vincent de Paul Society’s (SVdP) ministry to neighbors in need includes emergency assistance, food, shelter, and clothing through Food Pantries, Walk-in assistance, and Thrift Stores at six Conferences among Clark and Logan Counties. While independent of the National SVdP with Springfield District Council’s 501-C3 status, our Council still follows “the Rule“ of the “Vincentian” society as it collaborates with public service organizations and other Faith groups. Traditionally, SVdP has been blessed to accept some federal monies for emergency Covid relief and supportive housing. That said, SVdP has primarily been supported by the generosity of volunteers, parishioners, private donors, and community and private grants. Vincentians have always considered person-to-person service integral to the needs of our impoverished neighbors. During the Covid crisis, SVdP was forced to adapt all food, clothing, emergency assistance, and walk-in assistance. Services continue but have not resumed to the in-house, person-to-person interactions that define SVdP. Further SVdP needs safer, more accessible facilities; senior volunteers are finding it difficult to navigate our old facilities, (such as, carrying cases of canned foods on the narrow basement steps). Finally, because of space and storage constraints, our thrift center has restricted its extremely high volume of generous donations, still remaining completely over crowded. This opportunity will allow us to reconfigure all of our facilities to better accommodate volunteers and neighbors in need.

In spirituality, friendship, and service,

SVdP Springfield District Council Board

Hello Friends and Veterans,

Today I reflect on a truly remarkable woman that has awakened me and enriched my life unbelievably. Her name is Rosemary. She has permitted me to tell her story, upon which she reflects with nostalgia, heartbreak and happiness, sadness and joy. At 73 years old, she is a smart, sassy lady, whose bittersweet life is a symbol of HOPE, INSPIRATION, and HONOR.

Seriously brain-injured very early in life, developmentally challenged and illiterate as a result, Rosemary has been an unsinkable, yet homeless street lady most of her life. Over many of her years, she reports the good with the bad, making her way by “junking” on the streets of Columbus at OSU, and selling her treasures (from dumpsters and trash cans) at flea market’s. Rosie considered herself a friend of Columbus police, as she remembers that they frequently fed her and came to her aid.

Some years back Rosemary made her way to Springfield, Ohio and became embedded in the fabric and the family of St. Vincent de Paul Society. Rosie once came to SVdP as a customer and a person in need, then became OUR dear friend. Just weeks ago, we garnered assistance from U.S.S (United Senior Services) for Rosie and her (30 year) “dying veteran” husband Dan, so they could receive “Meals on Wheels”. What a gift that was to both of them at such a critical time! On February 15, 2020, a panicked Rosemary called, reporting that Dan had finally succumbed to his very rough life of poor habits and subsequent terrible health. Stuck by herself in a one room motel on the edge of town, embedded with our indigent population, Rosemary was now completely alone and unable to continue paying the required $880 a month for rent. Life was about to change dramatically.

In addition to the benevolence of police and coroner who aided Rosie at the scene of Dan’s death, Mr. Lynn Zechman (Jones Kenney Zechman Funeral Home), began making arrangements for her homeless Vietnam veteran husband by applying for indigent services for burial; and by arranging a military memorial at the Dayton VA cemetery. Mr. Zechman has provided wonderful care and respect to these two, who might otherwise have been dismissed.

In the interim, we got Rosie into OUR local homeless shelter, Norm’s Place, where she could begin her new life….. resting a bit and then looking for a lifelong home. Special thanks to caseworkers at IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network) for their compassion, expertise, and diligence at making this all happen. Preparation for Rosie’s new apartment is now underway. She is eating three meals a day. She gets invaluable advice on her husband’s V.A. Widow’s benefits. And she is moving forward.

Today, though she’s very tearful about losing her husband, Rosie reports never being happier. Our homeless shelter has given her so much more than temporary solace. And she brings joy and delight to them. Rosie has hope for her future; believes that she will soon have a wonderful home with friends and neighbors; and she looks forward to honoring her husband’s memory with a military service.

This lady is remarkable, and I am in awe! She not only gives me joy, but defines my reason for serving at St. Vincent de Paul Society. While we may not always know “How WE do it? “ we always remember, “Why WE do it!”

So What’s next for Rosie? She will honor her husband Dan’s LIFE and his SERVICE in Vietnam as she lays him to rest, and YOU are ALL Invited.

PLEASE SHARE This Invitation:
Funeral of Springfield’s Vietnam Veteran, Daniel Senters (Memorial, Taps, & Twenty-One Gun Salute)
Friday, March 6th, Promptly at 2:00pm Dayton V.A. Cemetery on W. 3rd Street

Let’s join together as Americans and Neighbors, as we honor and salute our veteran and his widow for their sacrifices.
In Spirituality Friendship, & Service.

Casey Rollins

NOTICE: St. Vincent de Paul Neighbors, Staff, and Volunteers,

Effective Tuesday, March 17, 2020

St. Vincent de Paul Pantry is OPEN with RESTRICTIONS until further notice.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society Springfield District Council is implementing changes for the overall welfare of staff, neighbors, and volunteers.
Until Further Notice:

FOOD PANTRY: SVdP’s CHOICE Pantry is temporarily altered.  Food will be prepackaged and given to neighbors. Recipients will wait outside by the ramp until called to pick up their food.

Food Pantry appointments will continue to be taken Wednesday for Thursday pick-up and Friday for Tuesday pick-up. Anyone coming in for food without an appointment or without proof for dependents will be given a box of food for a family of 1 or 2 until identification is verified.

For homeless who arrive needing immediate food assistance, St. Vincent de Paul Pantry has pre-packaged “to go” bags for them. If for any reason prepackaged food box distribution is not working effectively, our pantries may have to consider closing indefinitely.

Pantry must be sanitized regularly. Sanitize solution can be made with 1 TBSP of bleach per 1 gallon of water. Or Clorox wipes can be used.

EMERGENCY WALK-IN ASSISTANCE:  This service will be provided as usual, serving one person at a time. This includes emergency shelter, IDs, and birth certificates.

Any volunteers showing any symptoms are not permitted to work and should stay home and recuperate, not returning until further notice. Any volunteers who are not comfortable continuing with facilitating Pantry food-service or emergency walk-in assistance should contact Rick Darr, Jerry Lawrence, Or Casey Rollins immediately so that we can re-organize.

All SVdP Conferences: Will continue with activities at their discretion, but in compliance with State & O.D.H. guidelines. Please be sure to appropriately notify all Vincentians in your conference as well as publishing your revised conference activities in your church bulletins as necessary. Springfield District Council will be publishing Pantry and Store operation changes in our bulletins.

HOME VISITORS:  Please call the neighbors in need and attempt to resolve the situation by phone. If that is impossible, the pantry can be used for limited “home” visits with “Social Distancing”.  As we may not be in the pantry all day, home visitors need to call ahead to be sure the pantry will be opened.

As we all know, the constant flow of information, rules, and recommendations from the governor and the O.D.H. are fluid and evolve by the hour. These alterations are in compliance with Public Health directives from Governor DeWine and the Ohio Department of Health. Our usual practices will be restored once this Coronavirus is under control.  Stay healthy.
In Spirituality, Friendship, & Service….

This is a Saint Vincent de Paul shout out to Bechtle Avenue Walmart. Per store manager, Harold Miller, Walmart facilitated a $4500 grant for food and thrift store necessities at St. Vincent de Paul. $3000 was awarded to our pantry for food purchases. $1500 was used to purchase badly needed shelves for our thrift store. Add to that, Harold brought a crew of men to help install the shelves and re-organize our overly crowded storeroom. Please patronize Walmart and be sure and thank Harold and his crew for his ongoing care and concern for our neighbors in need.
